The idea behind citymovies.com began in June of 1998. It started out with the simple concept of a web page that listed theatres in Winnipeg, the movies that were playing and the show times for each movie. This text only page, which was simple and fast, formed the basic concept behind citymovies.com.

In October of 1998, the idea of transforming the simple single text page into a database driven, dynamic site with more content and functionality was formed.

On January 1, 1999, citymovies.com was officially launched on the Internet.

About a year later, in the fall of 2000, citymovies.com struck an agreement with MTS's mywinnipeg.com. This agreement had citymovies providing weekly updates of movie and showtime data which was automatically merged into their own format. This successful partnership lasted for almost 14 years, ending when mywinnipeg.ca migrated to mytoba.ca and dropped movie listings from their website.

With our obligation to mywinnipeg ended, and traffic to the site dwindling, the Friday updates quietly ended after 16 years, on December 26, 2014.

I will keep the domain around for a few more years. Even though I haven't touched the site in over two years I can't bring myself to take it down completely.
